Accompanying Events
WiPSCE 2024 will be accompanied by optional workshops on monday and two related events on Thursday.
Workshops (Monday Morning)
For participants who are able to arrive a little earlier, we are offering three free workshops on Monday 16th September, 9:30 - 11:30. Each workshop has a maximum capacity as written in the registration system. Please select which workshop you would like to attend when registering for WiPSCE. Workshops are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The pre-conferece workshops will take place at Marsstraße 20-22 in Munich. After the workshops, we will walk with the participants to the conference venue (~20 min).
- Workshop 1 : Trustworthiness in Qualitative Research.
In this workshop we will focus on qualitative research in computing education. As a qualitative researcher you may come across views in the scientific community that suggest that qualitative research is less credible than quantitative research. As researchers we all want to ensure that our methods are rigorous and can be relied on, and that other researchers can feel confident to build on our work. Back in the 1980s, the seminal work of Lincoln and Guba (1985) made a case for assessing qualitative research with trustworthiness. This concept includes four main structures: credibility, transferability, dependability and confirmability, which can be mapped to equivalents such as internal and external reliability and validity in the quantitative world. Shenton (2004) outlines very specifically what this means for the design, implementation and presentation of qualitative studies, and thus understanding trustworthiness can help us to frame our work with confidence.
The aim of the workshop is for attendees to increase their understanding of trustworthiness and gain some experience of applying it to their own work. Attendees will be given some pre-reading, and we'd like them to bring a piece of qualitative work that they are working on or planning to do, which will give us some useful scenarios to work with. Activities during the workshop will include presentation, case studies, and some interactive activities.
Workshop leaders: Dr. Sue Sentance and Salomey Addo, University of Cambridge
- Workshop 2 : Eye Tracking for Researchers.
Eye tracking technology is a powerful tool for understanding underlying cognitive processes without relying on explicit user feedback. With recent advancements, this technology has become increasingly accessible to both academic researchers and everyday users, making it easier to collect and analyze eye tracking data.
In this workshop, we will cover the fundamentals of eye tracking, including experimental design and data analysis techniques. Participants will gain hands-on experience with the latest eye tracking software and hardware, and learn how to apply these tools to their own research. This tutorial is designed for researchers from various fields who are interested in integrating eye tracking into their studies to gain deeper insights into human cognition and behavior.
Workshop leaders: Süleyman Özdel and Virmarie Maquiling, Chair for Human-Centered Technologies for Learning, Technical University of Munich
- Workshop 3 : Measuring and understanding learning processes using the Think Aloud approach.
Think Aloud is a powerful methodological approach which has been found to offer valuable insights into learning processes. Think aloud has been used to capture fine-grained learning behavior and allows researchers to observe how learning processes dynamically unfold. Furthermore, think aloud data has been used to improve validity of trace-based measurements (e.g., logfiles).
This workshop will introduce participants to the process of implementing the think aloud approach through an exemplary study. Participants will gain hands-on experience in analyzing think aloud data, followed by interactive discussions on the challenges, benefits, and workflow of using the Think Aloud approach. Participants are encouraged to give short presentations of their research projects which can be discussed in the interactive discussions.
Workshop leader: Dr. Lyn Lim, Chair of Teaching and Learning with Digital Media, Technical University of Munich
